The Creative Curriculum for Early Childhood
The Learning Center Preschool has chosen to use The Creative Curriculum for Early Childhood as a comprehensive tool for teaching and learning. This curriculum is developmentally age appropriate and encourages the cognitive, social/emotional, physical and language development of a child.
In addition, The Creative Curriculum for Early Childhood is research based in order to set and achieve standards and goals for each age. This goal is accomplished by knowing how children develop and learn. From this perspective, we acknowledge similarities and differences, while appreciating general standards and patterns of growth in all children.
We acknowledge that growth occurs individually and in stages. The objective is to take a look at various stages of the child’s growth and access according to these stages.Observation and documentation are key components in the process of attaining goals.
Special categories, called Forerunners, helps us to look at the behaviors which can be used as an assessment for all children’s learning and development. Those with disabilities or developmental delays are included in this category.
Each class will have their space organized into different interest areas, called learning centers. The outdoor areas will also be utilized in such a way as to include opportunities to explore and learn.
The centers will include but not be limited to:
1. Blocks Dramatic
2. Play Toys and Games
3. Art
4. Library
5. Science/Discovery
6. Sand and Water
7. Music and movement
8. Language
9. Arts
10. Cooking
11. Computers
The role of the teacher will be to guide the children’s learning through observing and assessing each child’s progress. Strengths and weakness will be visible and motivation and support will be supplied to enhance knowledge, skills and understanding.Small and large group activities, routines, long term interests and centers will aide in learning how to assess information in order to plan and guide this process throughout the day.
The Creative Curriculum for Early Childhood takes into account the importance of the family in educating the young child. School and family need to work together to build a partnership and understand the true meaning of taking an active role in a child’s education.Communication is a very important tool when dealing with learning as well as challenging situations.

I am a preschool teacher in MI and our program started Creative Curriculum this year. I love what it has done for my students and their families! I was hoping that you might have some ideas about observation notes. A lot of the other preschool teachers in our program are struggling with organizing notes. Do you have a system in place that you use in the classroom?
