Music Program

Our music program is comprised of these four elements:
  • Piano Performance
  • Strings Performance
  • Music Theory
  • Singing
Music is not only an art, it is a language and just as many of our students speak three or four languages, playing more than one instrument is a richness, particularly since the piano acts as a "base" affording students greater ease and fluidity when picking up another instrument. Furthermore, playing an instrument has a beneficial effect on cognitive skills, social development, as well as self-esteem. Our decision to incorporate Piano, Violin, Viola, and Cello classes as co-curricular rather than extra-curricular underscores this conviction. Moreover, orchestral instruments allow students to play together, in a group, developing their sense of observation and collaboration -- in other words, their sense of belonging to a community. Taking our holistic approach to learning one step further, the students’ French and English teachers learn to play an instrument alongside their students, modeling life-long learning and ensuring students understand that making mistakes is normal as they see their own teachers play an instrument as beginners themselves.

Piano Performance
This program is offered to all students aged 5 or older. The lessons are conducted as one-on-one sessions at school during school hours and incorporate the following piano performance aspects:
  • rhythm
  • reading
  • music theory
  • technique and posture
  • perfect pitch
  • musicality & artistry

Strings Performance
This is a school-wide program, beginning with our youngest students in Pre-K2 all the way up to our oldest in 7th Grade. Students can choose to play one of the following instruments:
  • the violin
  • the viola
  • the cello
Our approach is direct. Students do not wait three months before ever touching an instrument, and that instrument is not a cardboard stand-in. We believe in taking the most direct path to learning and that the very first connection starts with the instrument.

Music Theory
All of our students also receive instruction in Music Theory in order to better understand the language of music. Children learn about beats, scales, notes (their values and duration), as well as harmony, melody, and rhythm. This is approached differently with each grade in order to present the material in an engaging and level-appropriate manner to all students.
